They say "it is better late than never" since the event is already tomorrow, December 10-11, 2010.
The event hopes to encourage all Filipinos to learn to swim as a natural activity for one’s health, fitness and safety. Only a small percentage of Filipinos actually know how to swim, a very unfortunate situation in a country where a body of water is barely 20 minutes away.
Sen. Nikki Coseteng, president of the Diliman Foundation, Inc., is the organizer of the ambitious but doable record-breaking event for the most number of participants to swim 60 feet in relay within 24 hours.
The current Guinness would record for the “most number of participants swimming a fixed distance in relay in 24 hours” is held by Italy with 5,028 participants. The Philippines will try to set a new world record with 6,000+ participants.
