India bars non-technical foreign workers Expatriates can get employment visas in India only if they are hired for  highly skilled jobs with an annual salary of more than US$25,000.   In a report to the  Philippine Overseas Employment Administration,           the Department of Foreign Affairs said the Indian Home Ministry has  invalidated a Labour Ministry circular which allows the employment of  “one per cent foreigners among the total work force in any project  composed of 5-10 people”. In addition, the Home Ministry clarified that employment visa shall not  be granted for routine jobs with qualified Indian nationals such as  secretaries and clerks. The condition of the US$25,000 annual income limit will not apply to  ethnic cooks, language teachers (other than English teachers), and to  those working for the foreign embassies in India.  Some 1,010 Filipino workers are presently employed in India  in the  professional, medical and technical fields. UAE cuts work permit length for foreign workers

Maktoob DUBAI - The United Arab Emirates will reduce the length of work visas it issues to private sector foreign workers to two years from three years, local daily Gulf News reported on Wednesday. The new rule becomes effective from Jan. 11 and will affect millions of expatriates employed by private businesses in the country, the newspaper reported, citing Humaid bin Deemas, acting director-general of the Ministry of Labour. The change also affects residency visas, which are linked to work visas, the newspaper said. The UAE and other Gulf states operate a sponsorship system where employees' work visas are issued through their employer or ‘sponsor’. “As the labour card will be for only two years, naturally the residency visa will also be for two years," bin Deemas was quoted as saying. Hiring of foreign workers in Guam to start late 2011 – POEA

The recruitment and deployment of foreign workers, including Filipinos, for the construction of US Navy facilities in the island of Guam will begin during the last quarter of 2011 and not earlier as previously reported, according to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).   In a   statement , the POEA said prospective overseas Filipino workers will have to wait another year for the project’s construction phase to commence. The Department of   Labor   and Employment (DOLE)   earlier reported   that the construction project – a naval hospital worth US$700 million – is set to be awarded by the end of September this year, and the construction will begin by the first quarter of 2011.   According to the POEA statement, the project’s design phase will start during the first half of the 2011 as many of the construction projects are of build-and-design type, and construction activity in the island will begin during the second half.   The statement said initial bids and request

The Banaue Rice Terraces and the El Nido Beach Resort in Palawan highlighted the Philippines' tourism efforts at a recent tourism and travel show in Quebec, Canada. A report from the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa said the country participated in the International Tourism and Travel Show October 22 to 24 at Place Bonaventure. RP student tops Bahrain speech contest

A Filipino high school student from the Philippine School in Bahrain topped a recently concluded Inter-School Speech competition in Manama. High school senior Karen Marie Dotado won championship trophy and a $300 cash prize in the competition organized by the Bahrain-India Educational and Cultural Forum. "In her prize-winning speech, Ms. Dotado pointed out that people should re-live and re-animate the ideals exemplified by Mahatma Gandhi who fought and died to build what can truly be called United Nations, and let the evils of our society sharpen and polish our global consciousness towards world peace and harmony," the   Department of Foreign Affairs said . Filipino teachers in China cited as outstanding foreign experts

Citing a report from the Philippine Embassy in Beijing, the Department of Foreign Affairs identified the three as Ma. Socorro Rodriguez, Arnel Genzola and Lileth Mesias Reyes. "We are very proud for our Filipino awardees for their achievement. It was recognition of their talent and dedication while practicing their craft in China. More importantly, they continue to serve as ambassadors of goodwill as we continue to strengthen our people-to-people links with the Chinese people," the Philippine Embassy said in a statement posted on the DFA website.
