CHRISTMAS TREE HISTORY

Did a celebration around a Christmas tree on a bitter cold Christmas Eve at Trenton, New Jersey, turn the tide for Colonial forces in 1776? According to legend, Hessian mercenaries were so reminded of home by a candlelit evergreen tree that they abandoned their guardposts to eat, drink and be merry. Washington attacked that night and defeated them. The Christmas tree has gone through a long process of development rich in many legends, says David Robson, Extension Educator, Horticulture, with the Springfield Extension Center. Some historians trace the lighted Christmas tree to Martin Luther. He attached lighted candles to a small evergreen tree, trying to simulate the reflections of the starlit heaven -- the heaven that looked down over Bethlehem on the first Christmas Eve. Until about 1700, the use of Christmas trees appears to have been confined to the Rhine River District. From 1700 on, when lights were accepted as part of the decorations, the Christmas tree was well on its way to be...

Scientists propose one-way trips to Mars

PULLMAN (AP) – It's usually cheaper to fly one way, even to Mars. Two scientists are suggesting that colonization of the  red  planet  could happen faster and more economically if astronauts behaved like the first settlers to come to North America — not expecting to go home. "The main point is to get Mars exploration moving," said Dirk Schulze-Makuch, a Washington State University professor who co-authored an article that seriously proposes what sounds like a preposterous idea. At least one moon-walking astronaut was not impressed. "This is premature," Ed Mitchell of Apollo 14 wrote in an e-mail. "We aren't ready for this yet." Also cool to the idea was NASA. President Barack Obama has already outlined a plan to go to Mars by the mid-2030s, but he never suggested these space travelers wouldn't come home. "We want our people back," NASA spokesman Michael Braukus said. The article titled "To Boldly Go" appears in the latest is...

'Naked' airport scanners may be 'dangerous'

WASHINGTON (AFP) - – Some US scientists warned the full-body, graphic-image X-ray scanners now being used to screen passengers and airline crews at airports around the country may be unsafe. "They say the risk is minimal, but statistically someone is going to get skin cancer from these X-rays," Dr Michael Love, who runs an X-ray lab at the department of biophysics and biophysical chemistry at Johns Hopkins University school of medicine, told AFP. "No exposure to X-ray is considered beneficial. We know X-rays are hazardous but we have a situation at the airports where people are so eager to fly that they will risk their lives in this manner," he said. The possible health dangers posed by the scanners add to passengers' and airline crews' concerns about the devices, which have been dubbed "naked" scanners because of the graphic image they give of a person's body, genitalia and all. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) began rolling ou...

Goodbye 'RP;' Hello 'PHL' o 'PH'

MANILA  - Exercises in pronunciation or writing "o PH" PHL "for Thailand shortened Gmail instead of the traditional" RP, "references to" Republic of the Philippines. " According to the DFA, inconsistent with the prescribed codes of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) using the country to "RP." "The long standing usage of the initials RP is not in accordance with ISO codes, leading to ambiguous initials that refer CAN Return to Other countries," the DFA statement.   The policy set by ISO, the initials of the Philippines - based on two letters (alpha-2) and three letters (alpha-3) of its member countries - the code should use the country's PH and PHL. To satisfy the set ISO, the department issued orders with Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo on October 20, which requires 67 embassies, 23 consulates and permanent missions and four, to use the PH or PHL as the initials of the Philippines in their communi...

Santa Claus

Christmas is just around the corner, so here's a tidbit of knowledge Santa Claus , also known as  Saint Nicholas ,  Sinterklaas ,  Father Christmas ,  Kris Kringle , or simply " Santa ", is a historical, legendary andmythological figure who, in many Western cultures, is said to bring gifts to the homes of the good children during the late evening and overnight hours of Christmas Eve, December 24   or on his  Feast Day , December 6 (Saint Nicholas Day). The legend may have part of its basis in hagiographical  tales concerning the historical figure of gift giver  Saint Nicholas . A nearly identical story is attributed by Greek and Byzantine folklore to  Basil of Caesarea . Basil's feast day on January 1 is considered the time of exchanging gifts in Greece. While Saint Nicholas was originally portrayed wearing bishop's robes, today Santa Claus is generally depicted as a plump, jolly, white-bearded man...

Important Information about Google Buzz Class Action Settlement

This is just for information: Just received this information from my Google inbox and it is actually addressed to everyone in the U.S. who uses Gmail and as noted and quoted from the body of the letter " Just to be clear, this is not a settlement in which people who use Gmail can file to receive compensation. Everyone in the U.S. who uses Gmail is included in the settlement, unless you personally decide to opt out before December 6, 2010".  And here is the complete body of the e-mail: Google rarely contacts Gmail users via email, but we are making an exception to let you know that we've reached a settlement in a lawsuit regarding Google Buzz ( http://buzz.google.com ), a service we launched within Gmail in February of this year. Shortly after its launch, we heard from a number of people who were concerned about privacy. In addition, we were sued by a group of Buzz users and recently reached a settlement in this case. The settlement acknowledges that we quickly changed the...
