Internet use in provinces catching up with Manila

Provincial cities are catching up with Metro Manila in terms of internet use, according to a recent media study from   The Nielsen Company . Based on a rolling sample over the past year of males and females aged 10 and above across all socioeconomic classes, Metro Manila still showed the highest percentage of Internet users: as many as 40 percent of those surveyed went online in the past month. However, close behind the capital city are Tuguegarao (37 percent), Olongapo (35 percent), Angeles (34 percent), and Dumaguete (33 percent) — each hosting a high concentration of tertiary schools and other educational institutions. "Several factors are contributing to the rise of Internet usage across the country, particularly in urban centers outside Metro Manila," said Nielsen Media (Philippines) executive director Jay Bautista in an email interview with GMANews.TV. He enumerated the following growth drivers: Proliferation of  Internet  café’s which allow even low-income consumers to

Yahoo to phase out classic email in 2011

Yahoo Philippines officially unveiled this week a more streamlined version of its popular web email service, updating the classic interface which has remained essentially unchanged for 13 years. Last November 15, Yahoo Philippines launched   Yahoo! Mail Beta , which prominently features integrated access to social networks like Facebook and Twitter. It is also touted to be faster and more spam-proof than the   Classic version   that most people have been accustomed to for more than a decade. "Our goal is to be a facilitator and aggregator of content," said Isaac Souweine, Yahoo! product marketing manager for Southeast Asia. Souweine's sentiments echoed those of Yahoo's chief product officer, Blake Irving. "Online communication tools are an important part of people's lives —whether they're connecting with their friends and family, sharing pictures and videos, or keeping up on news across social networks," Irving said   press release . Although still i

Pope goes HD with Vatican's new high-definition TV

VATICAN CITY – The pope is going HD. The Vatican on Tuesday unveiled a new euro4.5 million ($6 million) high-definition mobile unit to let the Vatican broadcast the pope's Masses, audiences and trips in   high definition . The upgrade, paid for by the Knights of Columbus and Vatican television and offered at a discount by Sony, will let the Vatican keep up with the rapidly developing technology that is increasingly becoming the norm for broadcasters, documentary makers and others. Pope Benedict XVI has suffered several communications gaffes during his five-year pontificate, but the Vatican has been taking steps to bring his message to   YouTube , social networking sites and smartphones. —AP

Facebook’s new ‘social inbox’: Will it make email obsolete?

Facebook has launched a next-generation online messaging service that gives the user a Facebook.com email addresses, in a move seen as a shot across the bow of Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg unveiled what he called a "convergent" modern messaging system that "handles messages seamlessly across all the ways you want to communicate." The messaging service blends online chat, text messages and other real-time conversation tools with traditional e-mail, which Zuckerberg said had lost favour for being too slow for young Internet users. "It is true that people will be able to have Facebook.com e-mail addresses, but this is not e-mail," Zuckerberg said at an event in downtown San Francisco. "It handles e-mail." Zuckerberg dismissed reports referring to the messaging system as a "Gmail killer" aimed at the heart of free Web-based e-mail services from Google and similar services from Yahoo! and Microsoft. "We

Who might be hacking your BlackBerry?

LONDON - Rows over whether several emerging countries can effectively intercept Blackberry smartphone messaging have turned attention to how state spy agencies access electronic communications. For business users, the main question is not whether messages can be read but whether that information will then be used for commercial ends. Unsurprisingly, nations almost invariably refuse to comment on how intelligence information is used. Reuters has spoken to a range of industry analysts and former intelligence officers. Below is a summary of some of their views on how key states use electronic surveillance. RUSSIA From the days of the Tsarist secret police, Russian security agencies have had a reputation for closely monitoring foreigners and their communications. Security experts say many hotel rooms are rigged with bugs and outside corporates should be extremely wary about what information they take into the country. The Russian rollout of Blackberry smartphone was delayed for two years w

Hasbro unveils 3-D iPhone add-on

NEW YORK (AP) -- Hasbro Inc. is betting that iPod and iPhone users want 3-D viewing on the go. The nation's second-largest toy maker is set to unveil to investors on Tuesday a handheld device called My3D that attaches to the two Apple Inc. devices. It promises three-dimensional content that offers a 360-degree experience in gaming, virtual travel experiences and entertainment content. It's aimed at both children and adults. The device, which resembles a pair of binoculars with a slot in which users insert their iPod or iPhone, will be priced at $30. It will be available starting next spring at stores where Apple's iPhones and iPod Touches are available. Shoppers can then visit Apple's App store, which will allow shoppers to browse for additional My 3D content. Content varies in price; some apps will be free. Hasbro said it was guided by Apple during development and believes there's nothing available that matches the quality and 3-D experience on the iPhone or iPod T

Wii Motion Plus review

Source: Wiigamereview It’s tricky to review a static piece of hardware but that will not stop me from trying. Let’s start at the beginning; Wii MotionPlus is a small extension to the Wii Remote which connects and fixes to the Nunchuck port. Inside is a tiny electro gyroscope and if you’re not up on what a gyroscope is I suggest you think of it as a suspended but fixed sensor which can rotate freely in three dimensions. If that isn’t clear enough then just pretend there is a magic ball inside and that will make both our lives easier. Whilst the Wii Remote on its own had an accelerometer which could detect if you tipped it from side to side it wasn’t very accurate and only worked in straight lines. Adding the gyroscope to the already semi sensitive accelerometer allows for much greater precision and sensitivity because every possible movement and angle you move at will be detectable. All this really means is that the Wii Remote can now be used in 1 to 1 accuracy scenarios and in real tim

Review: Kinect motion-sensing system impresses

There are a lot of futuristic things we're still waiting on: jet packs for the entire family, self-driving cars and time-travel, to name a few. But one new, pretty darn amazing bit of technology has finally come to fruition, thanks to the folks at Microsoft. The Kinect system for the Xbox 360 game console, on sale beginning November 4 outside the Philippines, offers controller-free control of living room entertainment and aptly delivers a groundbreaking piece of technology. It's part game controller, part fitness guru and part "Minority Report," the movie where Tom Cruise famously interacts with a multi-touch interface by making rapid motions with his hands. Instead of gripping a physical controller to play games and movies on your Xbox 360, Kinect allows you to simply move your body — hands, feet, hips — to do everything. Kinect is a hybrid video camera and motion sensor that sits just above or below your television display. It looks like an extra wide webcam and con
