Facebook cartoon profile pics: A hijacked meme

The latest Facebook meme-for-a-cause has people replacing their profile pictures with photos of their favorite cartoon characters, supposedly to boost awareness of violence against children. But where did it come from? The most common form of the meme spreading on Facebook contains the following message, which has been reported at least since December 1:   "Change your Facebook profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same. Until Monday (December 6), there should be no human faces on Facebook, but a stash of memories. This is for eliminating violence against children." However, a   cursory search   reveals that there are no large-scale events or anniversaries related to violence against children within that time frame. Read More here... However, still it did create a great deal of child abuse awareness, ju st like one of facebook user posted on the said fanpage: This spread of awareness was not posted by the NSPCC or any campaign org

Facebook overtakes eBay as third most valuable US web firm

Facebook is now worth more than eBay in terms of privately held stock, making it the third- largest US internet business, and fueling speculation that the social network could sell shares to the public in the not-to-distant future. Facebook’s stock is trading at more than $16 on SecondMarket, an exchange for shares of privately held companies, said a person familiar with the latest pricing data. That would put its worth at about $41 billion, more than EBay’s $39.3 billion valuation on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Facebook only trails Amazon, worth $74.4 billion, and Google, valued at $192.9 billion, among US Internet companies. Facebook, the world’s largest social-networking site, previously vaulted past other Internet pioneers, such as Yahoo! and travel site Expedia. The valuation doesn’t indicate what Facebook will be worth in an initial public offering, which will only become known once it opens its shares to the public. The value of Facebook on New York-based SecondMarket has more than

Facebook yields a little in privacy battle

PALO ALTO, California - Facebook has unveiled tools to give users more control over personal information and let them set up cliques of friends, as the world's No.1 social network tries to protect its lead from a growing challenge by Google Inc. The new "Groups" feature makes it easier for its half-billion users to interact with select circles of friends, instead of having photos and personal messages openly viewable to family, college buddies and colleagues alike. Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said the change -- which analysts say is intended partly to mirror the various circles that people navigate in actual life -- should make people even more comfortable publishing personal information on the service. "If we can do this, then we can unlock a huge amount of sharing that people want to do, but today they just can't do, because either it's too annoying, or there just aren't the right privacy settings to be able to do this at large scale," Zuck
